The Long-Traveled Road that became Highway 31.
In early 2012, Steve Mueller set out on a new musical journey that would unite a group of artists from different backgrounds onto a common road that would soon become known as Highway 31 — And it’s been full-throttle, open road ever since.
A lifelong musician, Steve has built a successful career both as a performing artist and as a respected guitar amp guru with Mesa/Boogie (MESA Engineering). He has always credited divine intervention for bringing the right people and extraordinary musicians into his life at the right time.
After wrapping up a project with long-time friend and bassist Ty Anderson, Steve shared his vision of forming a new band. Ty jumped at the chance to climb aboard with his rock-solid bass chops and backing vocals, excited by the idea of building something meaningful from the ground up.
Now to find their groove…. Former Marine Sergeant and drummer extraordinaire Josh Phillips would soon join to drive Highway 31’s proverbial musical bus while adding soaring vocal harmonies. Steve and Ty first met Josh during a studio session for their longtime friend and musical artist Joslin Dsouza — the same connection that had originally introduced Steve and Ty. Steve was instantly impressed by Josh’s musicianship and deeply admired his service to the country. Steve knew they’d found “their groove” and Highway 31 had its musical core.
Highway 31 would continue to evolve and the search for an additional lead-vocalist and guitarist led Steve to accomplished singer/songwriter and guitarist Wade Kilgore. With a rich musical background, strong songwriting sensibilities, and a powerful, expressive voice, Wade quickly proved to be a perfect creative match. His ability to craft compelling songs and deliver heartfelt performances brought a new dimension to the project, and he soon began sharing lead vocal duties with Steve. The chemistry was immediate and fresh. A new identity of Highway 31 began to come into clear focus.
Highway 31 is a true collective — not a group of individual musicians and songwriters, but a band united by shared purpose and values. Their creativity and stability are rooted in their Christian faith and call to help spread Jesus’s teaching of peace, love and truth. The name Highway 31 reflects that faith as a reference to the Holy Trinity: “Three in One”. The “way” (Highway) to the “1” (God) is through the “3” (Father, Son & Holy Spirit), giving deep meaning to the name and number of Highway 31.
Highway 31 draws from a wide range of musical influences to create a sound that is uniquely their own. They believe a great hook, a meaningful story, and a memorable melody are timeless — regardless of genre. They are best known for their powerful melodic vocals, signature harmonies, and the classic driving force of guitars, bass, and drums. Above all, they know the true success of their music belongs to the fans who connect with it and make it part of their lives and personal stories.
More than anything, the band wants to thank everyone who has supported them on this journey. They hope many more will be inspired to join the ride and a deeper faith calling through Highway 31.
